Transformers toys set to top Christmas lists

It may only be June, but Christmas excitement is already revving up with toy cars expected to be the most sought after gift this year, according to a leading retailer.

Hamleys toy store released its annual chart of predicted top sellers today, and cars are set to motor to the top of children's Christmas lists.

Hit movies Transformers 3 and Cars 2 are driving the surge, but the central London shop said traditional favourites and hi-tech gadgets are still popular.

However, parents will need to brace themselves as many of the toys have hefty price tags.

The Cars 2 Fully Loaded McMissile might look like any other sports car, but packed under its unassuming body there are missiles that rise up near the front headlights, a bulletproof targeting visor which flips up from the back of the bonnet and a rear mounted missile that comes out of the boot.

Priced at €40, it also says some of the character's phrases from the film in the voice of Michael Caine, including: "This is top secret!" and "We're being followed!"

The Transformers 3 Mech Tech Leader Asst is a robot hero figure from the hit movie series. The toy converts from a vehicle to a robot and back again, and features blaster and missile sounds.

Also on the list is the My Keepon, which can make more than 50 different sounds and intuitively dances when music is played as well as responding to touch.

For young Doctor Who fans, the Doctor Who Ride-In Dalek will be a hit, as children can drive the motorised Dalek which has 10 authentic phrases including "Exterminate".

A Justin Bieber singing doll, a helicopter with an in-built camera, a barking toy puppy and a singing Elmo from Sesame Street are also among the expected favourites.

Laura Olver, the head of buying at Hamleys, said: "There's a lot that is movie driven this year, with Cars 2, Transformers 3 and the success of Disney Princess.

"But as you'd expect from Hamleys there's a lot of traditional favourites in there.

"Finn McMissile, with his fully loaded car, as well as the Transformers bumble bee I'd imagine will be sought after this Christmas."
