Bob Bolduc says the kids are our future. Marsha Del Monte gives the credit to the customers, with a nod to store managers.

But however they describe the need and the response, the bottom line with Pride Stores is action. This year, the local and regional chain delivered in a big way with a $16,000 donation to the Toy for Joy fund, ensuring that many, many deserving children will not be denied the joy of Christmas.

From left are company president Marsha Del Monte, store employees Jill Ramsdell and Sha Hossain, Pride Stores owner and CEO Robert Bolduc, Danielle LaTaille, social services director for the Salvation Army and David Horgan, director of advertising for Pride Stores.

"We have great customers. I also know our customer accounts at each store, and we keep our managers' feet to the fire," said Del Monte, the company president.

"We thanked them for their efforts last year, but we also said, 'Not good enough. We can do better.' We know if we ask our customers to get behind this charity, they will."

And they did. Customers donated more than $10,000 to the Christmas drive, which brings toys, books and happiness to children in Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin counties.

Bolduc, CEO of the Pride chain, said the company kicked in its own sizable donation of more than $5,000, raising the final total to $16,000.

It far exceeded the company's 2018 donation, which was generous in its own right at $10,000. All 30 Pride stores in the region collected donations from customers during December.

Toy for Joy's drive officially ended its 97th year on Christmas Eve. Mail donations sent just before Christmas and received after the holiday will be channeled directly into the fund.

Toy for Joy is a collaborative effort by the Salvation Army in association with The Republican, El Pueblo Latino and MassLive. Media partners include Reminders Publishing and The Westfield News. Community partners are the Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation, Pride Stores and Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi. The Davis foundation provided funds to help ensure books are included for every child who receives gifts.

When gifts were distributed, the kids were thrilled — and grateful. Isn't that part of what Christmas is all about?

"We had such a good year this year," Salvation Army social services director Danielle LaTaille said.

"Everybody was so happy. (Families) were not only grateful for the toys, but for their quality. People said these were the best toys we'd ever had."

The Pride Stores donation provided a tremendous boost in the final days of the campaign.

"Pride Stores and their customers have been incredible partners to the Toy for Joy effort," said Cynthia G. Simison, assistant to the publisher and managing editor at The Republican. "Their generosity this year is overwhelming at a time when the need to Toy for Joy is also great. Kindness is an integral part of the company philosophy at Pride, and this donation clearly demonstrates kindness from the staff and customers."

Simison said she holds out hope that last-minute donations will help narrow the shortfall in this year's campaign, for which a $150,000 goal was set.

The donation by Pride helped push the drive past the $100,000 mark. With the help of many other generous contributors, the total stood at $125,005 on Christmas Day. Simison said her Christmas wish would be to reach the goal.

"I keep the faith until the very last contributions arrive. We will publish a final list of donors next week," she said.

"Our readers and Toy for Joy supporters have helped make this Christmas morning a happy one for thousands of children and their families across Western Massachusetts. We send our thanks to each and every one."

It was a team effort at Pride.

"Marsha fired up the troops to make sure this was a success at all our stores," Bolduc said.

"Bob has been doing this long before (I came)," Del Monte said. "He knows to invest in children and communities builds better communities."

Bolduc understands the problems facing society at all levels. There's only one way out, he said.

"If we're going to fix the mess we're in, we've got to start with the kids. That's the solution," he said.

"The situations some are in are not their fault. Everywhere you turn, you see kids facing problems."

Pride tries to help by hiring those old enough to work. Bolduc wishes he could do more.

"I saw numbers that say 42 of 100 young people in Springfield are without jobs. We're all stuck, living in that bubble that goes through their systems," he said.

"We see kids coming in and looking for a job. If we can hire one in 10, we're lucky."

Del Monte said Pride was involved in a school program that rewarded children with their own toothbrushes. What most people take for granted takes on special meaning for those who have gone without.

"One little girl was so excited, just to have her own toothbrush. She said in her family, they'd had to share," she said.

Pride therefore looks to help in any way it can. Executives believe there is no better avenue than Toy for Joy, which gives children a toy, a book and most of all a message that people care and there's reason for hope.

"Who can't get behind a charity for children? Our customers are wonderful and so generous," Del Monte said.

CapFed Best News: Lowman Hill custodian's generosity brings shine back to Christmas for 4-year-old

A preschooler at Lowman Hill Elementary School is having a much more joyful Christmas than her family expected, thanks to a sympathetic fellow Topekan.

Four-year-old Kaylee Diaz had been looking forward to finding some presents under the tree, including toy horses. But the work of a Grinch threatened to ruin Christmas morning. Her mother said several toys for Kaylee were in her uncle's truck when it was reportedly stolen Dec. 16 from the Buffalo Wild Wings parking lot.

Upset that someone could be so unkind, Kaylee told her preschool teacher, Lisa Chapas.

"She was really sad. She seemed distraught that there were things going on that she was trying process," Chapas said of the child.

Chapas planned to replace Kaylee's book bag, which was also lost in the theft. But when she mentioned the situation to a custodial worker at the school, he felt compelled to go a step further.

Charles Murray, night sweeper at Lowman Hill Elementary, has very little interaction with students while doing his work at the school. But he said when he heard from Chapas what had happened to Kaylee's presents, a personal experience prompted him to want to intervene.

Murray said that when he was a child growing up in Battle Creek, Mich., someone stole Christmas presents from his home. He said that because his family couldn't afford to replace the stolen gifts, he received no presents that year.

"I know how I felt, and I didn't want any other child to go feeling the way that I felt when that happened," Murray said. "It really broke my heart to hear about it. Every kid deserves to have presents at Christmas time. So when her teacher told me about what had happened, I said, 'Let's see what we can do about it.' "

Murray coordinated with Chapas to pick out a few gifts that Kaylee would like. He delivered the gifts to the teacher while all the students were out of the classroom. The teacher then presented the gifts to Kaylee and her father.

"It was the kindest thing I've ever seen," Chapas said. "(Murray) doesn't even know the child, but he just wanted to help. He said that nobody shouldn't have a Christmas."

The gifts were greatly appreciated by Kaylee's mother, Lorena Reyes.

"She was really happy because they gave her things that she loves, like toy horses," Reyes said. "I'm really happy because Kaylee is getting back something that she lost.

"I'm thankful for the school and for having people there who are worried about Kaylee and care about her. We will be happy at Christmas because they were so generous to help."

Murray said the memory of having his presents stolen when he was a child has been a lifelong reminder of how impactful generosity can be.

"A lot of times we get caught up in thinking, 'What am I going to get for Christmas?' " Murray said. "We should think more, 'What can I do for other people to help them out so that they can have a great Christmas?' "

50 Cent Bought His Son an Unlimited Toys ‘R’ Us Shopping Spree for Christmas, So Top That Santa

Rapper 50 Cent just gave his 7-year-old son a Christmas present that is so outlandishly over-the-top that no mere mortal parent could possibly top it.

According to USA Today, Curtis James Jackson III, known professionally as 50 Cent, brought his family to the Toys "R" Us store in the Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J., on Saturday. A camera crew followed the family and captured the moment 50 Cent ruined it for the rest of us by telling his son, Sire, "You can have whatever you see. All of it's yours, really, so you might as well pick out whatever you want, right?"

That's right, he basically bought his son an entire Toys "R" Us. Can even Santa Claus compete with that?

To rub it in, the rapper shared a video of their trip on his Twitter account, where Sire can be seen choosing toys and meeting Geoffrey, the chain's giraffe mascot.

Photos of what most kids might deem the Greatest Christmas Presents Ever were also shared on Sire's Instagram account, which according to USA Today is run by his mother, Amber Joy.

She captioned the photo, "When I asked my Dad for the 'WHOLE Toys R Us Store' for Christmas I didn't think he would actually do it, but he did 😱🤩❤️ Thank you Daddy! Best Christmas Ever!"

50 Cent may have a particular affinity for Toys "R" Us as both have declared bankruptcy in recent years. The rapper filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2015, while Toys "R" Us closed up shop in 2018 before reorganizing as Tru Kids Inc. and reopening two brick and mortar locations, one in Houston and this one in New Jersey.

Disney toys returning to McDonald's Happy Meals

After more than a decade of absence, McDonald's Happy Meals will once again come with Disney toys.

The renewed partnership starts in June.

As part of the deal, McDonald's agreed to Disney's nutrition guidelines which seeks lowers calories, salt, and sugars in the meals.

The toys will start with 'Incredibles 2,' followed by toys from 'Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2.'

Disney is the parent company of ABC13.

Momentarily Feel Something Like Childhood Joy With the Return of McDonald’s Classic Happy Meal Toys

The fast-food chain is hoping nostalgia can drive some sales

With all the changes made to the Happy Meal in recent years, the childhood treat is nearly unrecognizable to Gen Xers and Millennials. Where is the mandatory soda? Where is the toy that is surely a choking hazard? So now, in an attempt to lure back the kind of grown person who casually uses the phrase "adulting" — and to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Happy Meal — McDonald's is reintroducing 15 popular toys from the Happy Meal's past, including the Hamburglar and Grimace, one of the Teenie Beanie Babies, a Furby, and Hello Kitty.

Speeeaking of McDonald's, the company is likely hoping the Happy Meal fervor overshadows the fact that its CEO, Steve Easterbrook, was just ousted for having a consensual relationship with a subordinate. The company's board determined Eastbrook "violated company policy and demonstrated poor judgment involving a recent consensual relationship with an employee," and Eastbrook admitted the relationship was "a mistake." Market Insider says that, because of the upheaval, the company is set to lose $3.4 billion in value.

Surely plastic models of the Fry Guys will even that out.

50 Cent Rents Out Whole Toys 'R' Us for Son Before Christmas

50 Cent, Son, Sire Jackson, Christmans 2019, Toys 'R' Us

    Instagram / Daphne Joy

It's good to be 50 Cent's son. Not only did Christmas come a few days early for Sire Jackson, 7, but boy, did Dad spare no expense!

Last year, all 885 Toys 'R' Us stores were closed after the company filed for bankruptcy. A few weeks ago, two were reopened under new ownership. One of them, located in the Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, NJ, was recently shut down down for a few hours just for 50 Cent, who treated and ex Daphne Joy's son to a private shopping spree.

A source confirmed to E! News that 50 Cent spent $100,000 to rent out the store and let the boy have anything he wanted in it.

Daphne posted photos of the event on her and the child's Instagram pages late on Friday.

"When I asked my Dad for the 'WHOLE Toys R Us Store' for Christmas I didn't think he would actually do it, but he did," read one post. "Thank you Daddy! Best Christmas Ever!"

A decal on the floor of the store read "Sire's Toys R Us" and featured a caricature of the boy. He and his parents posed with a store worker dressed up as Toys R' Us mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe. Sire also played Rock, Paper, Scissors with the person.

"Christmas came early for Sire lol," Daphne said on her Instagram Story.

The child picked out a few gifts, such as a small plush Geoffrey, some LEGO sets and a NERF blaster.

"Daddy got Sire all the LEGOs, but not just all the LEGOs, all of Toys R' Us," Daphne said on her Instagram Story. "And what do you say to Daddy? Say, 'I love you!' Sire's in utter shock right now and disbelief."

"Yes we had a blast!" she wrote. "Thank u so much!"

Sire is 50 Cent's youngest child. He also has an adult son from a previous relationship.

E! News returns Monday morning, Jan. 6 at 7 a.m.!

McDonald’s celebrates 40th anniversary of Happy Meal with throwback toys

This photo shows a McDonald's restaurant in Ridgeland, Miss., Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018. McDonald’s will soon banish cheeseburgers and chocolate milk from its Happy Meal menu in an effort to cut down on the calories, sodium, saturated fat and sugar that kids consume at its restaurants. Diners can still ask specifically for cheeseburgers or chocolate milk with the kid’s meal, but the fast-food company said that not listing them will reduce how often they’re ordered. If you already have watched 'The Great British Baking Show': 'Making It'

If you are a TV fan, you've probably either been told how wonderful "The Great British Baking Show" is or experienced the delightful British baking competition yourself. But if you're looking for reality TV that champions hard work, good-natured competition and offers plenty of silly puns from beloved comedians, look no further than Nick Offerman and Amy Poehler's "Making It."

Two seasons of NBC's crafting competition feature "makers" from all over the country who try their hand at twee challenges such as 3D party invites or making a piggy bank in the shape of what you're saving for. The series borrows some of the best parts of "Baking," including an outdoor setting (a rural barn), a low-stakes competition (challenge winners get patches) and hosts that are established comedians, not just pretty people (Poehler and Offerman are, as usual, a delight). It might just inspire you to DIY next year's Christmas gifts.

    Stream it on Hulu.

If you like a so-bad-it's-good TV show: 'The Witcher'

Before we get any further, it's important to emphasize this point: "Witcher" is not a good TV show. The Netflix series, starring Henry Cavill and based on a video game, is hacky, full of confusing timelines, bizarre monsters, unnecessary nudity and terrible dialogue. But "Witcher" is the rare series that transcends its badness to become addictively watchable. Maybe's its Cavill's gruff, monotone delivery of every line (Witchers don't have many emotions, you see) or complicated plots around the dumb-sounding "Law of Surprise" or the silly-looking special effects. But all of the ridiculous elements of "Witcher" add up to a series perfect for your end-of-the-year soupy brain. The eight-episode season even gets a little interesting, ending on a surprisingly effective cliffhanger.

    Now streaming on Netflix.

If you're almost (but not quite) finished with Christmas movies: 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'

If you've already watched "Love, Actually" and every cheesy Hallmark, Lifetime and Netflix Christmas movie, you might turn to Tim Burton's notoriously dark children's film. A 1993 musical about what happens if the scary creatures who make Halloween were in charge of Christmas, the film will thrill and scare the little ones and make the adults remember what it was like being a kid. Bonus: A refreshingly brief 76-minute running time, considering how bloated modern children's movies are.

    Stream it on Disney+.

More to watch: The 25 best TV shows of the decade, from 'The Americans' to 'Game of Thrones'

The beloved Peruvian bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) goes on a new adventure in London in "Paddington 2." (Photo: WARNER BROS.)

If you want to feel unvarnished joy: 'Paddington 2'

The two live-action Paddington Bear movies hold a unique place in cinema for touching the hearts of a group of extremely cynical adults (read: movie critics). What these unbelievably sweet films have on other children's movies is a certain CGI bear (voiced with softness and naïveté by Ben Whishaw) who champions kindness above all, floods bathrooms and accidentally gets locked up in prison, but is still the most lovable creature around. The first film was a revelation in 2015, and the second, released in 2017, cemented Paddington's place as a classic.

Stream it on HBO Go/HBO Now.

Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever in "Booksmart." (Photo: Annapurna Pictures)

If you're OK watching an R-rated movie with your family: 'Booksmart'

If you are ready to cackle your way through some truly awkward (but hilarious) gags and teenage buffoonery, it's worth watching this gem, from first-time director Olivia Wilde. One of the best films of this year according to USA TODAY's film critic Brian Truitt, "Booksmart" joins the ranks of great high school comedies with the story of Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever), two overachieving girls who try to party as hard as their peers on the night before graduation. Their pitch-perfect comic timing and palpable chemistry bring the electric script to life. A group of quirky supporting teen characters rounds out the film, which is so funny its pornography-related jokes are worth seeing, even with your parents nearby.

    Stream it on Hulu.

Canadian dollar stores sold more than $2 billion in food last year — who knew?

Opinion Dec 13, 2019 by Sylvain Charlebois Hamilton Spectator

A visit to any dollar store is something to remember: the bright lights, aisles filled with things you may or may not need, and the distinctive smell.

If we had to create a smell that mixes plastic with China, the smell in a dollar store would be it. It's not overly appetizing but a greater number of Canadians are grocery shopping in dollar stores these days.

In the United States, there's a true dollar store invasion. There are more dollar stores in the U.S. than Starbucks and McDonald's combined, over 30,000 of them.

Major U.S. chains include Family Dollar, located mostly in cities, Dollar Tree, where everything is actually $1, and Dollar General, the largest retailer in the country when it comes to the number of stores. Dollar General has 16,000 stores in total.

By 2025, given how aggressive these companies are, the number of U.S. dollar stores could increase by 20 per cent in just two years.

Some claim dollar stores are creating U.S. food deserts, forcing grocery stores in urban centres to close.

In Canada, the picture is becoming similar. The leader in discount grocery stores in Canada is Dollarama, which has more than 1,200 stores. Dollar Tree has roughly 220 stores nationwide. Canada is also home to other retailers such as Dollar Store With More, Great Canadian and Buck or Two.

There are more than 1,700 dollar stores in Canada. Per capita, the ratio is not as high as in the United States, but the number is expected to increase by almost 100 stores a year over the next few years.

These stores sell everything from dishes to gift wrapping to clothes to toys and, of course, food. Dollar stores are increasing their food offering in order to compete against grocery stores.

Sales at Dollarama exceed $3.5 billion yearly. Last quarter, Dollarama reported that some store sales were up by 5.3 per cent. In other words, business is good.

That number can only make grocers dream.

Food sales are lifting Dollarama's financial results. The biggest Canadian chain, it doesn't report food sales. But we estimate the company sold more than $1.6 billion worth of food products last year. So it can easily be hypothesized that dollar stores in Canada sold well over $2.1 billion worth of food products this past year. That's the same sales generated by 212 regular-sized grocery stores in Canada. And that number could reach $3 billion by the end of 2020.

This doesn't represent a huge portion of the grocery market at a little under two per cent. But given low margins and how low-priced these products are in dollar stores, traditional grocers have felt the pressure.

Most Canadians still grocery shop in traditional grocery stores. Yet some of us are tempted by food sold in dollar stores, even though it's anything but inspiring and many of the products offer little or no health benefits. All of the food is non-perishable. Most brands carried by dollar stores are unknown to Canadians. Those that are known are sold at discounted prices.

Unlike in the U.S., where several dollar stores have freezers and fresh produce, no Canadian dollar stores sell fresh products, at least that we know of.

However, what's happening in the United States may be a sign of things to come in Canada. Dollar stores in Canada could soon collect more of our food dollars by selling other staples such as fresh or frozen goods.

The main reason consumers buy food at dollar stores is for snacking. Dollar stores are like convenience stores, at a discount. They offer cheap, portable, simple quick-fixes for our in-between-meals cravings.

And let's face it, many Canadians struggle financially, even if they have a job, a mortgage and a car. Dollar stores are conveniently becoming more accessible for craft goods, sticky notes, gift bags and, of course, food.

It's difficult to see an end to the dollar store invasion in North America. However, this hardly marks the end of the grocery store, or even the creation of food deserts. Some data suggests dollar stores have generated organic growth in food sales; these products would not have been sold by other players in the market.

Grocers in Canada have also done an incredible job of defending urban markets in recent years. But the threat is real in suburbs and small towns.

Given how well dollar store chains are managed, it will be interesting to see how things change over the next few years.

50 Cent gave his 7-year-old son a whole Toys R Us for Christmas

A video posted to 50 Cent’s Twitter shows him driving on dark New Jersey streets, while a suspicious Sire asks why they’re being filmed. The rapper parks the car and leads his skeptical son into Westfield Garden State Plaza, New Jersey’s biggest shopping mall. A man pulls back a curtain to reveal “Sire’s Toys R Us,” a private paradise featuring the boy’s portrait on giant screens and on the floors.

“You can have whatever you see,” 50 Cent explains. “All of it’s yours so you might as well pick out whatever you want, right?”

“Right,” the boy answers, before loading up shopping bags with Legos, firing Nerf guns with his dad and swinging lightsabers with Geoffrey the Giraffe, Toys R Us’s beloved mascot.

“When I asked my Dad for the “WHOLE Toys R Us Store” for Christmas I didn’t think he would actually do it, but he did,” reads on post on Sire’s Instagram, which is run by his mother, Amber Joy. “Thank you Daddy! Best Christmas Ever!”

Aside from being an unbeatable Christmas present for Sire, the celebrity shopping spree gives the gift of publicity to the newly revived Toys R Us. Saddled with nearly $8 billion in debt and unable to keep up with online and big-box competitors, the company closed more than 800 stores and shuttered its doors in 2018 after 70 years of business, putting nearly 33,000 employees out of work. Now, a little more than a year later, Toys R Us has been reborn, just in time for the holidays.

The comeback is starting small, with just the New Jersey store and one at the Galleria in Houston. But the new stores mark a stark departure from the labyrinthine behemoths Toys R Us was known for; the new stores are just 6,500 square feet, compared to the typical 40,000 square-foot ones of the company’s heyday. New stores are geared more toward experiences than overwhelming aisles, with spaces for events, toy demonstration and in-store play. The New Jersey store even has an in-store treehouse, complete with a doorbell and a spiral staircase. Its anchor brands â€" Lego, Nintendo, Nerf, Paw Patrol â€" are on full display, but the in-store selection is smaller than in the past.

“We’re reinventing Toys R Us to make it fun and interactive for kids and parents,” Richard Barry, a former Toys R Us executive who is leading the new venture, told The Washington Post earlier this year. “This is a global brand that is absolutely beloved in the United States.”

In October, Toys R Us announced it was teaming up with one of its fiercest rivals, Target, to jump-start its online business. Through the partnership, shoppers on Toys R Us’s recently relaunched website can click a link to make their purchases through Target, while taking advantage of other Target perks such as curbside pickup, two-day delivery or same-day delivery through Shipt. Target had rushed in to get a piece of Toys R Us’s business after its demise in 2018, (Toys R Us had annual sales of $11.5 billion when it filed for bankruptcy) adding 250,000 square feet to its toy sections and an amped-up toy selection and a partnership with Disney.

The revamped Toys R Us is a joint venture between Tru Kids Brands â€" which acquired the Toys R Us brand in January â€" and b8ta, a chain of “experiential” consumer electronics stores. The new effort is being led by Barry and Phillip Raub, the founder of b8ta.

“As a kid, my memory of Toys”R"Us was running up and down the aisles kicking balls and playing with the coolest toys,” Raub said in a news release announcing the comeback. “As the retail landscape changes, so do consumer shopping habits. But what hasn’t changed is that kids want to touch everything and simply play. In partnership with Richard and his team, we are excited to bring back Toys R Us in an immersive way, focused on creating a fun and engaging experience for kids â€" and adults, too."

The company has said it hopes to have 10 stores by the end of 2020, and future locations are expected to be around 10,000 square feet. Other b8ta executives have alluded to the potential for several hundred stores in the future, but nothing has been cemented yet. But after the company’s just-in-time rebirth and 50 Cent’s viral Christmas extravaganza, one thing is for sure: Somewhere, Toys R Us executives are partying like it’s their birthday.

McDonald's celebrates 40th anniversary of Happy Meal with popular toys

CNN - This year marks the 40th anniversary of McDonald's first Happy Meal.

Today, roughly one in every four orders at McDonald's includes a Happy Meal, according to retail data tracker Sense360. Each Happy Meal contains the option of a hamburger or chicken nuggets, a side like french fries and a drink.

It also includes a toy, some of which have become collector's items.

McDonald's is celebrating this milestone by re-releasing some of its most popular toys over the past four decades, including Ty Beanie Babies' Patti the Platypus and the Tamagotchi, CNN reports.

Between Nov. 7-11, McDonald's will sell a "Surprise Happy Meal" in 90 countries that will include the throwback toys.

It's the latest quick-service restaurant to tap into nostalgia to excite customers. Since fast-food customers are not particularly loyal to any brand, fast-food companies must resort to marketing tactics or wacky food creations to draw in customers.

50 Cent's Christmas gift to his 7-year-old son, Sire: An entire Toys R Us store

Despite what the magazines say, celebrities are not just like us. And neither are celebrities' kids.

Case in point: Your child probably isn't going to get his or her very own Toys R Us store this holiday season.

But that's what 50 Cent gave his 7-year-old son, Sire, on Saturday.

The family descended on the store in the Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey, with a camera crew in tow. When they got there, the rapper told Sire, "You can have whatever you see. All of it’s yours, really, so you might as well pick out whatever you want, right?”

The rapper posted a video of their trip to his Twitter account, showing Sire choosing toys and meeting Geoffrey, the store's giraffe mascot. Dad got into the action, too, playing with a Nerf dart blaster.

The "Candy Shop" rapper's ex, Amber Joy, posted a few sweet photos of the excursion to Sire's Instagram account, which she maintains.

She captioned the first post, "When I asked my Dad for the 'WHOLE Toys R Us Store' for Christmas I didn’t think he would actually do it, but he did Ă°Ÿ˜±Ă°Ÿ¤©Ă˘¤ĂŻ¸ Thank you Daddy! Best Christmas Ever!"

A second post, with a video clip of their arrival says, "Did this just happen? #ToysRUs #BestChristmas"

The New Jersey Toys R Us, much smaller than the cavernous Aladdin's caves of old, is one of only two recently opened brick-and-mortar locations the company has after it was forced to liquidate last year. The other is in Houston.

Ride-on, projectile toys top 2019 dangerous toy list

    Posted Dec 19, 2019

LANSING, MI - The wrong toy can cause serious injuries or even death among children.

Topping the list of toys to watch out for are ride-on toys, such as the Pogo Trick Board, and those that include projectiles, such as the Nerf Ultra One, according to the "10 Worst Toys" list by World Against Toys Causing Harm (WATCH).

"Every three minutes, a child is treated in a U.S. emergency room for a toy-related injury and because of this risk, it's important that we share a few tips on how to make informed decisions when purchasing toys this holiday season," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement.

The AG's office released its 2019 Dangerous Toys Guide this week to help protect Michigan's children from harm, especially as last-minute shoppers race through isles collecting Christmas gifts. The guide includes a list of general toy hazards, types of toys that could be harmful, and 15 toy recalls from this year.

View the recalls with information about refunds, repairs and replacements in the gallery above. Discount stores and resellers may continue to sell recalled toys, the guide warns.

In 2018, 17 children under the age of 15 died in toy-related incidents, according to the U.S. Consumer Protection Commission. Most of the deaths were associated with riding toys and children choking on small parts, like balls and balloons. That year, there were about 166,200 toy-related emergency room visits.

    General toy hazards include:

  • Small parts (parts smaller than 1.25-by-2.5 inches pose a choking hazard, according to USCPC)
  • Strings
  • Projectiles
  • Toxic substances
  • Rigid or sharp materials
  • Inaccurate warnings and labels
  • Toy categories that can pose danger to children:

  • Ride-on toys: Ride-ons are the leading cause of toy-related child deaths. Always supervise children using these toys. Include appropriate safety equipment – such as a helmet, knee and elbow pads – when gifting these toys.
  • Toys with batteries: Battery compartments should require a tool to be opened since batteries can be a choking hazard.
  • Balloons: Balloons are the second-leading cause of toy-related deaths in children. When ingested, even a small piece of balloon can block a child's airway and cause suffocation.
  • Noisy toys: If it sounds loud to you, it's too loud for a young child's sensitive ears.
  • Magnets: When ingested, magnets can cause serious and even fatal injuries. They can perforate the intestines and can require surgery to remove.
  • Smart and connected toys: Toys connected to the internet pose a privacy and security threat to children. Use passwords and security settings to make the toys safer.
  • 2019 "10 Worst Toys" list:

  • Nerf Ultra One: Risk of eye injury
  • Spike the Fine Motor Hedgehog: Ingestion and choking risk
  • Bunchems BunchnBuild: Hair entanglement and choking hazard
  • Yeti: Ingestion and aspiration injury risk
  • Nickelodeon Frozen Treats Slime: Chemical ingestion and irritation hazard
  • Anstoy Electronic Toy Gun: Realistic weaponry
  • Diecast School Bus: Choking hazard
  • Pogo Trick Board: Head and impact injury hazard
  • Power Rangers Electronic Cheetah Claw: Risk of eye and facial injuries
  • Viga Pull-Along Caterpillar: Strangulation and entanglement hazard

McDonald’s to Celebrate 40th Anniversary of Happy Meal by Bringing Back Retro Toys

McDonald's Happy Meal might be for kids, but officially it's over the hill.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the company's first Happy Meal, the kids meal that helped McDonald's achieve fast food supremacy. Today, roughly one in every four orders at McDonald's includes a Happy Meal, according to retail data tracker Sense360.

Each Happy Meal contains the option of a hamburger or chicken nuggets, a side like french fries and a drink. And a toy, some of which have become collector's items.

McDonald's is celebrating this milestone by re-releasing some of its most popular toys over the past four decades, including Ty Beanie Babies' Patti the Platypus and the Tamagotchi. Between November 7 through 11, McDonald's will sell a "Surprise Happy Meal" in 90 countries that will include the throwback toys.

It's the latest quick-service restaurant to tap into nostalgia to excite customers. Since fast-food customers are not particularly loyal to any brand, fast-food companies must resort to marketing tactics or wacky food creations to draw in customers.

Here's a brief history of the Happy Meal:

    1979

The Circus Wagon Happy Meal, as it was originally known, launched in the United States in June 1979. The meal included a hamburger or cheeseburger, fries and cookies. Some of the early Happy Meal toys included a McDoodler stencil, McWrist wallet and a spinning top. The box became instantly recognizable with the meal.

    1982

After becoming a hit in the United States, McDonald's expanded the meal internationally. It debuted first in Latin America before hitting Australia and New Zealand.

    1984

McDonald's added McNuggets as a Happy Meal option. The addition inspired a line of Happy Meal toys modeled after the McNuggets.

    1991

McDonald's partnered with United Airlines to offer Happy Meals on some of its flights. The deal ended in 2001.

    1998

The first-ever global Happy Meal debuted with Disney film "Mulan." The meal had identical packaging and toys across 40 countries.

    2012 – 2013

As its customers shifted toward healthier eating habits, McDonald's began overhauling the Happy Meal. In 2012, McDonald's made the french fries portion smaller, and it added fruit as an option. In 2013, it added milk or juice as beverage choices.

    2018

McDonald's said it would provide cheeseburgers in Happy Meals only upon request. It removed artificial preservatives from some of its entrees and added bottled water as a drink option. The company said that 3.4 billion fruit, low-fat dairy and water items have been served in Happy Meals in the US since 2013.

    2020

Starting next year, McDonald's will add a new reduced-sugar and low-fat chocolate milk option. It has 25% less sugar compared to the previous version.

'General Hospital' cast snags best Disney gifts for underprivileged children

LOS ANGELES -- We're deep into the holiday season, and the cast of ABC's "General Hospital" is spreading Christmas cheer. They took to the Disney Store to participate in the World's Ultimate Toy Drive, which benefits underserved children.

"We've got so many people here, and it's really cool because you can feel it lift everybody up," actor Marcus Coloma said.

Sydney Mikayla loved coming back to the Disney store for such a good cause: "I love Christmas so much. Each of these actually reminds me of toys I used to have when I was a kid."

Mikayla, along with the rest of the cast, filled their hampers to the brim so they could donate as many toys as possible. "I just want to make sure to get them big, fun Christmas gifts they can keep that will also remind them of the happiness that Christmas is really about," Mikayla said.

The cast helped pick out an array of Disney toys to bring joy to less fortunate children this holiday season. However, with so many specials and limited-edition items, navigating the Disney store during the holidays does require some strategy.

Donnell Turner revealed, "I came early and did some pre-scouting so I know what the hot items are right now. Let's just say one of them has to do with Minnie Mouse and a baking set."

It's no surprise that Disney merchandise are hot ticket items on children's wish l ists, but unfortunately they're not accessible to everyone. That's why the Walt Disney Company recently partnered with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots--so every child has the opportunity to experience the magic of the holidays.

"I know how much Disney means to me personally, so I know how much it means to a lot of kids. To get toys that are from Disney is a really big deal," Katelyn MacMullen said.

While many kids will be opening all the hot new Disney toys, including the recently-released Baby Yoda merchandise, there are a lot of children who don't receive presents at all.

Gunnery Sgt. Darnel Wilson was one of those underprivileged kids growing up. "I remember the Marines coming and giving us toys," Wilson reminisced. "We're here for the kids."

"You're not just making a difference in a child's life for a day," William deVry stated. "You could potentially make a difference...for the rest of [their] life."

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of this station.

    Historical Overview

TD Ameritrade's Investor Movement Index (IMX) has generally correlated with the S&P 500 as clients react to equity price movements, but the index has gone through uncorrelated periods. Beginning in January 2010, when TD Ameritrade started tracking the IMX, the index rose with equity markets until April 2010, when it peaked at 5.40. In May 2010 investors experienced the "Flash Crash" and the IMX began a sharp downward trend. The IMX didn't reach 5.00 again until the S&P 500 was well above April 2010 levels. The index eventually peaked at 5.56 in June 2011. This peak was immediately followed by a plunge in equity markets, and in the IMX, as the media was dominated by the U.S. debt ceiling debate, S&P downgrade of U.S. debt, and European debt concerns. The S&P 500 began to recover in the fall of 2011, but the IMX continued to decline until it reached a new low at the time in January 2012. As the S&P 500 began to sustain an upward trend in early 2012, the IMX started to rise. In 2013, as economic conditions improved and the S&P 500 climbed to record levels, the IMX rose to the high end of its historical range, finishing 2013 at 5.62, and continued to rise in 2014 amid geopolitical tensions related to Ukraine and the Middle East, until seeing slight declines in October and November. By the middle of 2015 the IMX had seen increases, as equity market volatility had reduced to near historical levels while the market continued its upward trend. As 2015 ended its third quarter, volatility had returned to markets, as global economic concerns and speculation around the timing and trajectory of Federal Reserve rate increases seemed to rattle overall equity markets. This uncertainty continued to play a role in the equity markets through the fourth quarter of 2015 and into early 2016. The volatility accompanying this uncertainty abated in the second quarter of 2016 and remained low until late in the third quarter. Just as it had in 2015, the IMX saw increases mid-year during the period of lower volatility. The IMX continued to climb into the fourth quarter reaching 5.83 in October 2016, its highest point in two years. A brief spike in v olatility during November, timed around the U.S. presidential election, coincided with a slight pullback in the IMX, which then ended 2016 at the high end of its historical range. The IMX started 2017 with an upward trend and reaching an all-time high in March, before pausing in April as lower volatility lead to a decrease in the IMX. The momentum resumed in May, with the IMX breaching 7.0 for the first time ever in July of 2017. The IMX took another brief pause in September, before following markets higher and breaching 8.0 for the first time ever in November and ending 2017 at an all-time high. Volatility returned to the markets in early 2018, and the IMX decreased for four consecutive months to start the year. The IMX then rebounded in the spring of 2018, and continued higher during the summer on the back of better-than-expected earnings and increasing equity markets. The IMX headed higher during the fall of 2018 as economic growth increased before heading lower in late 2018 as t he Nasdaq Composite entered a bear market to end the year. Geopolitical issues were in the headlines during early 2019 as the U.S. and China traded tariffs. The IMX rebounded along with equity markets in the spring of 2019 on optimism of a trade deal with China and the unemployment rate nearing a 49-year low. The IMX remained range-bound during the summer of 2019 as trade-related policy concerns led to investors favoring less-risky assets, including fixed-income products.
