The curse of soap anniversary episodes - EastEnders deaths to Hollyoaks triple murder

EastEnders are about to air a shock demise during the big 35th anniversary celebrations this February, as a character falls into the River Thames.

A boat stunt sets the scene for disaster and death next month, as the BBC soap celebrates 35 years on air.

But EastEnders isn't the only soap to go big during the celebratory episodes, with soaps often using the milestones to air shocking and gripping scenes.

From deaths, big reveals and even live episodes, soaps including Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks go all out to impress viewers.

Ahead of the latest drama, and with Corrie set to hit 60 years on telly this year, and Hollyoaks reaching it's 25th, here's a look back at some of the deadliest anniversary episodes ever...

Back in December 2010, tragedy struck on the Street when a tram crashed and fell from the bridge and tracks above what is now The Bistro.

Residents ran for their lives, as the tram carriage skidded up the Cobbles and left several injured.

Ashley Peacock tragically died as he sacrificed himself, to help get Peter Barlow and the others to safety after the restaurant collapse.

Molly Dobbs also died as she shielded baby son Jack, having run into the corner shop for safety only for it to collapse on top of her.

EastEnders' 20th - Dirty Den's Murder Zoe, Sam and Chrissie teamed up against Dirty Den (Image: BBC)

In 2005, EastEnders aired two deaths to mark 20 years of the soap including the murder of original villain Dirty Den Watts.

The character was killed after a showdown with wife Chrissie Watts, Sam Mitchell and Zoe Slater - soon dubbed the Witches of Walford.

Sam went to prison after Zoe believed she'd killed him, unaware Chrissie had secretly killed him after realising he was still alive.

Also killed off was gangster Andy Hunter, who got on the wrong side of the latest villain in the Square Johnny Allen.

He was chucked over a flyover in brutal scenes.

Emmerdale's 40th - Live Episode and Carl King's Murder Carl King was murdered on Emmerdale by Cameron Murray (Image: PA)

For Emmerdale's 40 year celebrations, they aired a massive live episode.

It featured two births - Debbie Dingle and Gennie Walker - and also two weddings - Chas Dingle and Dan Spencer, and Katie Sugden and Declan Macey.

But that wasn't all, as villain Carl King was killed off live on air in a major whodunnit storyline.

Hollyoaks' 20th - The Gloved Hand Killer Reveal The Glove Hand Killer struck again in Hollyoaks before being unveiled (Image: Lime Pictures)

Hollyoaks took the opportunity during their 20th anniversary episode in 2015, to finally unveil the identity of The Gloved Hand Killer.

Nurse Lindsey Butterfield was revealed to be killer of victims including Rick Spencer, Phoebe McQueen and Dylan Royle.

But she didn't stop there, and the special anniversary week saw her claim not one but three new victims, including boss Charles S'Avage, husband Freddie Roscoe and Ashley Davidson - Freddie turned out to be alive.

EastEnders' 25th - Bradley Branning's Death Bradley Branning fell off The Queen Vic roof and died (Image: BBC)

EastEnders love an anniversary episode death, and in 2010 they did it again.

They went one bigger than Dirty Den's demise though, airing a live episode with an on-air death.

Bradley Branning fell off The Queen Vic roof and died, running away from police who were about to arrest him for Archie Mitchell's murder.

But in another twist just moments later, the true killer was finally unveiled to be his wife Stacey Branning.

Coronation Street's 55th - Live Episode Coronation Street aired the live murder of Callum Logan

Another soap live episode was aired in 2015, as Corrie celebrated their 55th anniversary three months early.

Callum Logan's reign of terror came to an end as he was murdered by ex Kylie Platt, before being buried under the house.

He had been trying to assault current flame Sarah Platt, leading to Kylie attacking him and unintentionally murdering him.

EastEnders' 30th - Who Killed Lucy Beale? Reveal Lucy Beale was murdered by brother Bobby (Image: BBC)

EastEnders followed up the killer reveal regarding Archie Mitchell in 2010 with another murder secret five years later.

Celebrating their 30th anniversary, the BBC soap finally told viewers who had killed Lucy Beale in a live double episode.

It initially teased Jane Beale had killed her stepdaughter, before it emerged she was covering for her young stepson Bobby Beale, Lucy's sibling, with a flashback confirming he accidentally killed her during a row.

Keiki shop with cops

KAHULUI — As a single mother waiting to start a new job, Wailuku resident Amanda Vierra had been saving presents to reuse as Christmas gifts this year.

But there was no shortage of new toy choices for her 2-year-old son, Konner, who was among children picking out presents with help from Maui police officers Saturday at Kmart.

"I think it's the most amazing thing ever," Vierra said, as Police Chief Tivoli Faaumu wheeled a shopping cart filled with toys and Konner through the store. "This is the best Christmas ever. It's the first time I get to get him something."

Sixty-two police officers, including recruits, turned out at 6 a.m. to volunteer for the annual Shop With a Cop event sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Kahului.

"It's the highlight of our year for many of us," said Richard Minatoya, club president.

Now in its 13th year on Maui, the event has grown from 35 children a couple of years ago to 50 last year and 60 this year — the largest number in the state — said Bruce McDonald, a Kiwanis board member who started the program here in 2004.

Kmart opened an hour early for the event, providing breakfast for families and two wrapped gifts for each child. The store increased its contribution this year so each child received a $115 gift card to buy presents, McDonald said.

In addition to helping families selected by the Children's Justice Center and other agencies, the event provided an opportunity for children to spend time with police officers, McDonald said.

"They get to see these officers are our friends," McDonald said. "So they know they're there to help us.

"It's nice to see all these officers here. It's the best day of the year for me. It's fantastic."

Faaumu said the event "will benefit some of the families that are having some tough times."

"It will give them a good holiday," he said.

Before being invited to participate, Haiku resident Priscilla Felipe said she had planned to buy one Christmas present each for her 7-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter.

"When they called me, I literally was emotional," she said. "I totally bawled out.

"My son was so excited. He loves cops. Before we even start the car, he tells me, 'Buckle up.' "

DUI Task Force Sgt. Nick Krau hands a "Frozen"-themed blanket to 2-year-old Kiyomi Sarmiento and mom Priscilla Felipe at the Shop With a Cop event Saturday at Kmart. The Maui News / LILA FUJIMOTO photo

DUI Task Force Sgt. Nick Krau and police recruit Nathan Lau helped Felipe and daughter Kiyomi Sarmiento pick out gifts, including a stroller and a "Frozen" blanket.

With three boys, Krau said he doesn't have a lot of experience selecting gifts for girls.

But after learning Kiyomi likes the movie "Frozen," Krau said, "We have something in common."

After being a single mom for two years, Felipe said the children's father is now "the stay-at-home dad."

"It's the hardest job in the world, but it's the biggest blessing," she said. "So I'm so blessed.

"I tell everybody don't get me anything for Christmas. I just want my kids to be happy. I got my family for Christmas."

Krau has volunteered for Shop With a Cop since it started. "It gives us a chance to have positive interaction with the community, with these kids and their families," he said.

"In traffic, we do a lot of enforcement. It's a very necessary part of our job," Krau said. "This gives us the opportunity to do what we really like doing — helping people.

"You don't make a lot of friends doing enforcement. Now I have a new friend."

Wailuku resident Crystal Delapinia said sons Jashua, 7, Jeremiah, 10, and Jason Jr., 11, were excited to be there Saturday. "They were waking up every morning and asking for over a week now," she said.

She is a "full-time house mom," while the boys' dad, Jason Young, "works seven days a week trying to keep afloat."

"It's kind of hard," said Delapinia, who is expecting another child in February. "Christmas came by fast."

Officer Ryan Saribay helped Jashua pick out a Nerf gun and other toys. "It's giving back to the kids," said Saribay, a Juvenile Section officer. "And the kids see us in a different light."

While most children rushed to the toy aisles, 11-year-old Cornelius Aveado first picked out a plaid shirt, socks and "Batman vs. Superman" hat.

"He's a sensible shopper," said officer Brandon Phillips, who will get to see more of Cornelius next year when he attends Iao School, where Phillips is the school resource officer. "Now we can look for the fun."

Cornelius added a radio-control car to his selections before checking out.

Some children were focused on finding gifts for family members before looking for purchases for themselves.

Before taking Konner to the checkout line with his toy police car and John Deere truck, Faaumu and partner Deborah Ross made a stop in the grocery aisle for a half-gallon and a smaller bottle of chocolate milk.

"I think he wants the chocolate milk more than anything else," Faaumu said.

Like many of the other officers, he made up the difference when the purchases added up to more than the gift card amount.

Vierra said the event Saturday added to the seasonal joy for her family, which includes three other children.

"We got our own place. I'm getting a job. He has child care," she said. "It's awesome."

Police traffic investigator Justin Mauliola helped Kylie Naganuma navigate the aisles with her 2-year-old son, KJ Gerard.

Shortly after 8 a.m., she was wheeling her son and a shopping cart filled with toys out of the store.

"We were so blessed," she said.

Aldi shopper snaps up giant £20 unicorn toy for just 99p

ONE Aldi shopper has snapped up a bargain after finding a GIANT unicorn cuddly toy reduced to just 99p from £20 in store.

The shopper, who posted about her find on the Latest Deals, Extreme Couponing and Bargains Facebook group, says they had "loads" of the soft toys in one of her local Wolverhampton stores.

Another Aldi customer commented on the post saying they'd paid £5 for the unicorn in their local shop just the other day, while we reported earlier this month that some had seen the unicorns discounted to £6.

Another person, who claims they work for Aldi, commented on the post saying that all the unicorns had been reduced in their store too, adding that it's worth asking staff to triple check the price of old Christmas stock.

But not everyone has had such luck, with one person saying they were still full price in their local.

Aldi told The Sun these are likely to be store specific deals so it's worth calling ahead before making a special trip - use Aldi's store locator tool to find your nearest.

Online at Aldi, the toy has been reduced by a fiver from £19.99 to £14.99, plus £2.95 delivery (it's free on orders over £20) - but you're limited to two per order.

The unicorn measures in at 100cm by 58cm by 70cm.

One shopper commented on Facebook: "OMG. I would love this for my daughter's birthday in March." Another added: "I paid £20 for my daughters but by far the best money I've spent!!"

While someone else wrote: "No way, 99p?????? They were £20 at Christmas, bargain that is." Another happy customer added: "We have this!!!! I paid the original £20 but it's beaut".

We couldn't find giant unicorn cuddly toys being sold for a better price online.

Top picks for 2017: Brain-boosting toys for your children

With December 25 approaching, thoughts are naturally turning to bright shiny playthings waiting under the Christmas tree. Globally, the toy business is worth €90 billion annually and companies invest huge sums and man hours in products they believe will fire the imagination of kids.

ut in a world dominated by social media and the internet, getting children off the couch and away from apps and video games has never been more of a challenge. This year, one of the solutions the industry is focusing on is "collectibles" - toys that speak to boys', and girls', love of multiple varieties of the same plaything.

"Collectibles are huge, accounting for nine per cent of toy sales this year and the creators of them, such as LOL, are now making bigger versions to tempt the family cash for Christmas," says Peter Jenkinson, Editor of the Toylogy website.

"Fingerlings, Hatchimals CollEGGtibles and Zomlings are wildly popular in the lower end of the price spectrum. Retro TopTrumps and Rubik are having a great time as nostalgia kicks in and at the top end." Such is the demand for collectibles, shortfalls are already being reported for leading brands.

"These are small, pocket-sized items that kids can play with and trade to complete their collection," says Jackie Breyer, Editor in Chief of toybook.com. "At €14.99 and under, they are affordable gifts, but some - including Fingerlings, Pikmi Pops and L.O.L. Surprise - can be hard to find already. Kids are particularly enamoured with toys in 'blind' packaging. They love to be surprised by what's inside."

"The L.O.L Big Surprise ball looks like this year's 'hard to find' Christmas toy. Especially for the pre-teen girl market," says YouTube toy reviewer Stuart Bullock of Toy Review UK. "The app enabled BB9E from the forthcoming Star Wars movie will be a must-have for big kids and little ones. Perennial favourites like Lego will always be a big hit at Christmas time, licensed sets from blockbuster movies: Justice League and the aforementioned The Last Jedi will be big hitters. Don't forget Minecraft!"

However, though kids may know what they want, parents will naturally wish for their children to play with toys that do more than pass the time. The concept of toys that boost intellectual and emotional development is as old as the first junior science kit. Here are some top picks for 2017.

For babies and toddlers:

Lamaze Stacking Starseeker, €20 (Amazon)

Crinkles are a big hit with babies and this colourful toy from infant-specialists Lamaze delivers just what they love. There's lots of opportunity for interaction and building motor-skills, with the rocket-shaped toy separating into four segments, which baby can take apart and reassemble.

LeapFrog LeapStart, €39.99 (Smyths)

This pre-playschool "interactive learning system" from early education market leader LeapFrog will help familiarise young children with words and numbers. A stylus is used to play audio samples, introducing kids to counting, animal sounds and pronunciation. Sixteen separately sold books allow children to participate in puzzles and reading challenges, suitable from six months to seven years.

LeapFrog Scoop and Learn Ice Cream Cart, €49.99 (Smyths)

Kids will get out kick from pushing this colourful cart while "selling" ice cream. Along the way, they will become familiar with rudimentary concepts in colours and numbers, as well as learning basic sequencing skills. The best bit is a "smart" scoop that calls aloud colours and flavours of ice cream as the child selects them.

Pre-schoolers:

Magformers Construction Set, €34.99 (Smyths)

Children can build colourful 3D structures with these plastic toys that link together using magnets. In addition to encouraging imaginative thinking, they assist with motor-skills and hand-eye coordination. A huge range of Magformers is available, including light-up LED kits.

Fisher-Price Think and Learn Teach 'n Tag Movi, €49.99 (Smyths)

A robot kit for very young children, the Teach 'n Tag will encourage kids to follow it around the house - thus giving them something to do beyond vegging in front of the TV - and participate in simple games. The device also facilitates critical thinking by, for example, asking "What shape is a ball?" (press read for circle, blue for square etc).

Melissa and Doug Lacing Beads in a Box, €22 (Amazon)

Children will enjoy threading beads on to a string - building motor skills along the way. The kit also comes with wooden blocks for stacking, aiding the development of hand-eye co-ordination.

For pre-teens:

Kano Computer Kit, €220 (Amazon)

A crash-course in IT, this kit contains a entry-level computer which the child snaps together, as if playing with Lego. The CPU is then connected to a screen - Kano offers one as an add-on if you haven't one of your own - and simple apps and games introduce children to the basics of programming, utilising the widely-used Python language.

Ubtech Jimi Robotics Kit, €139.95 (Apple Store Ireland)

If robots really are inevitably about to conquer us, make sure your kids are ready with this snap-together set. Once the robot is assembled, a companion app is used to control it. They can dance, walk, spin and jump - fun for kids and also an introduction to basic engineering.

My First Lab Duo Microscope, €153 (Amazon)

This high-quality microscope encourages your kids see the world in an entirely new light. Magnified up to 400 times the original size, under the lens, flower petals, hair strands etc take on a whole new appearance. The kit includes petri dish, test tube, slides and an activity book, with tips on how to get the most out of the microscope.

For Teenagers:

Lego Mindstorm, €279.99 (Lego Ireland)

One of the best mass-market robot kits. Build a robot and then download the accompanying app and learn how to programme your creation using software coding. Expensive, but a toy that will grow with your child as they become more adept at programming.

Cozmo by Anki, €219.99 (Smyths)

Cozmo is among the most advanced robots created for kids. The cutesy 'bot packs a lot of power, with complex software that means it learns to "recognise" its owner, and can be programmed to complete simple tasks.

Makeblock Robot from €100 (Amazon)

A cheaper option for anyone sent running by the steep price of Cozmo and Mindstorm. There's a lot to get stuck into: unlike pricier rivals, this is a full kit, so components - motherboards, wheels etc - have to be put together from scratch with the provided screwdriver and wrench. But this is actually a potential selling point, as the toy doubles as an early introduction to electrical engineering. It makes for a steeper learning curve, but arguably greater adaptability - and with a relatively tolerable impact on your wallet.

Clarification: Tangleweed And Brine by Deirdre Sullivan is published by Little Island (€15.99), not New Island, as printed in yesterday's Irish Independent.

Could your child's teddy bear be spying on you? With internet-connected 'smart toys' increasingly common, fears are growing hackers could use kids' playthings as a backdoor into your house. Here's how to stop them...

1. Tablets: Hackers might try to access you or your child's information using malware, so make sure the device has the latest anti-virus software installed, such as Avast Mobile Security and Antivirus and Lookout Antivirus and Security.

2. Smart Dolls or other playthings: When registering the toy, check what data it is sharing with the toy maker. A teddy bear company should not need to know your location or other private details.

3. 'Starter' home computers: Again scrutinise the small print - what is the manufacturer doing with your child's personal data. If it is sharing the information with third parties to "improve" the product, think twice about whether you wish to give your permission.

4. Other smart toys: If a toy has smart features, do some research beforehand. Have there been data breaches or reports of malware infection? If so, think carefully about the risks.

"We have known for a long time that this market need was unmet as evidenced by the high demand for aging existing camper vans still on the road," VP and managing director of Mercedes-Benz USA Vans Robert Veit s aid in a press release. "With the help of our partners, we have utilized the Metris to create a product suited to those who seek adventure but also need a versatile and comfortable vehicle for their day-to-day lives."
